Caring for Your Canine
Your canine companion can give you a lifetime of unconditional love, loyalty and companionship. In return, your pet counts on you to provide proper nutrition, fresh water, safe shelter, routine exercise, regular veterinary care, companionship and more. By following a few simple guidelines you will be sure to develop a rewarding, lifelong relationship with your companion.
Provide your canine companion with a balanced diet, including access to fresh water. Premium quality dry food provides a well balanced diet. Feeding people food should be avoided because it can result in vitamin and mineral imbalances, teeth and bone problems, obesity and picky eating habits.

- Give your canine companion safe shelter. If your pet spends a lot of time outside during hot weather you will need to provide shade and plenty of cool water. During cold weather a warm, dry, covered shelter is essential to provide protection from the elements. Indoor shelter is ideal.
- Provide your pet with identification. Follow your local laws for pet licensing. A dog license, ID tag, implanted microchip or tattoo will ensure the safe return of your pet if she becomes lost.
- Every dog needs regular exercise. Exercise will keep your pet physically fit and mentally stimulated. The proper amount of exercise depends on the breed, age, and health status of your pet. Exercise also helps prevent behavior problems such as digging and chewing.
- Visit your veterinarian for regular check-ups. Yearly check-ups will aid in early detection and treatment of disease. Because pets age faster than humans they may need twice yearly check-ups starting at seven years of age.
- Enroll your pet in a training class. Positive training will allow you to control your pet’s behavior safely and humanely. It also will enhance the bond that you share with your canine companion.
- Be patient and loyal to your canine companion. Make sure the expectations you have for your pet are reasonable. Most behavior problems can be resolved with patience and proper training. You may need to consult with a professional if you are struggling with your pet’s behavior.
