Gizmo is our 12 year old Maltapoo. He joined our family when he was just 2 months old. He was a little fluffy cotton ball at that time! He stole our hearts right away with his bossy personality. He was full of love for all of us and always a mischievous little guy! But no one could ever be mad at him because he was always so dang cute!
He has always been the boss of the house! When he came into the family we had another dog, a min-pin, and a cat who also believed she was the boss. They had a few tangles – which the cat usually won – but all in all they got along great. “Mo” would give her a run whenever he could and she would put him back in line when necessary. Lizzy, the cat, passed away when Mo was only a few years old. It didn’t take him long to assume the full roll of “the boss”. Our other dog, Lady, was his very best friend. They would do everything together. They loved to go for walks and chase things and dig holes together. They were masters at escaping and often kept us running trying to keep up with them and keep them out of trouble. Lady unfortunately got very sick and passed away when Gizmo was only 6. He was very lost when this happened and went through a period of deep depression. He was lonely and actually put on a lot of weight since he didn’t have his friend to run and play with. We showered him with love and did all we could to boost his spirits. Finally, after a little over a year, we decided he needed a friend. That’s when Khloe came into our family. Mo was slow to accept her, but once he did we saw the fire come back into him! He showed her the ropes, made sure she knew he was the boss, and started showing life again.
Over the last five years we have watched him slow down a bit with age, but he is still in charge and always up for an evening walk or occasional car ride. He was diagnosed with diabetes about a year ago. As we have worked on finding the right treatment for him he has experienced a lot. He has lost a great deal of weight and has become much more mobile. He has lost his sight, but has become very good at navigating our home and his hearing and sense of smell have helped him to overcome that struggle. He loves to sit in the sun on the back deck on a warm day. He is happy just knowing he is the boss as he listens to the cats play or Khloe chase her toys. He loves to cuddle up on a warm blanket on a cold day and take a long nap. He loves treat time and is quick to let us know if we are a little late on getting them to him and Khloe. He still snuggles up for cuddles and loves before bed at night. He loves movie night when he can just curl up on my lap and get a nice, long belly rub. And even though he has gotten a little grouchy with age, he is still my sweetheart. He still gets into trouble and looks up at me with his sweet face and I melt. We just can’t seem to get mad at him. We treasure every minute we have with him and know we are blessed for all the love and fun he has brought into our family. We look forward to many more years of his antics and how he makes us smile and laugh!
